Spring 2007 Performers
Deb Callahan Band and The Shambells
co-sponsored by Baltimore Blues Society
Friday, March 9

Calling her the “next Bonnie Raitt," Blues Revue Magazine declared that "Philly's Deb Callahan has the pipes, the songs and the raw talent to graduate to the next level." With a day job as an urban social worker, Callahan is exposed to lots of raw material for her songs about hard times and tough women. She has translated that material into blues songs flavored with elements of rock and funk on her two albums. She has taken her rocking quartet (featuring guitarist Allen James, drummer Doug Masters and bassist Garry Lee) to blues festivals from California to Florida to Maryland. On one of her new songs, Callahan defends her approach to life, “She said you walk too loud, you talk too loud, you play too loud, you love too loud. She thinks I’m a sinner and I should do some time, but living loud was my only crime."

For the past 10 years, Pete Kanaras has been the lead guitarist for Washington’s legendary blues-rock band, the Nighthawks. During that time he got to know Clark Matthews, the drummer for the Tom Principato Band; Tommy Hannigan, the bassist for Catfish Hodge; Russ Beeker, the lead singer for Goin’ Goin’ Gone; and guitarist David Goodfriend, a singer and guitarist for Goin’ Goin’ Gone. Kanaras has put them together in the Shambells, an all-star quintet of D.C. musicians. Their debut album, “Exit Wounds," features songs from Peter Case, Dave Edmunds and T-Bone Walker as well as originals by Beeker, Goodfriend and/or Kanaras. In every case the Shambells tilt the roots-rock formula back in the rocking direction.
